St Oswald’s Way- September 2024- D14 / 8 Kirkwhelpington- Heavensfield..and a bit more to the bus stop in Wall.. quite a few road blocks🤣

Written by:

A continental (+ )breakfast fit for a King and Queen from our hosts Dominic and Elaine. Extras to take on our day included almond croissants and maple and pecan pastries.

Someone nearly forgot their walking poles

Definitely easier walking today – needed to be, as at least 18 miles to do. Setting a cracking pace of almost 3 mph….

…Before the first road block of the day

…quickly followed by the 2 nd

Close by the Bavington Crags

Today we covered a lot of Northumberland countryside…the sky providing suitable backdrop..(do I really mean that?).

11 o’clock snack – Almond pastry- ‘don’t talk to me I’m eating’!

More road blocks

A few windmills

Even one where the roof and arms were blown off in 1900

We did have a few locals of the 4 legged kind stare at us …

Before arriving at Dere Street , otherwise known as the B 6318…the old Roman road…or at least nearby to itwhich reminds me…what did the Romans ever do for us?

(With reference and thanks to Monty Python)

The aqueduct.
What?
…they, they gave us the aqueduct…

Yes, they did give us that, that’s true
And sanitation Yes, that too
The aqueduct I’ll grant is one
thing the Romans may have done
And the roads, now they’re all new
And the great wines too

…..

Well, apart from medicine, irrigation,
health, roads, cheese and education,
baths and the Circus Maximus,
what have the Romans ever done for us?

What have the Romans,
what have the Romans,
what have the Romans ever done for us?

Brought peace.
Oh, shut up!”

(Best seen on U tube.)

I’m sure they didn’t bring all these stiles!
The Military Road.

..and all of a sudden we arrived at our final destination, the cross of St Oswald marking the end of the St Oswald’s Way – or the site near where Oswald won his battle over CADWALLON in 634 to claim back his thrown as King of Bernicia.

A little wind swept.

.. no souvenir shop…no Coffee shop…no T shirt seller with ‘ I’ve completed the St Oswald Way’ merchandise….

Best way to finish 103 miles.

Now off to the bus stop in Wall, another mile and a half down the road, fortunately all downhill.

Thanks to Carrylite and St Oswald’s Way guidebook

We couldn’t have done it without you.

Well thumbed…provided a fair bit of the commentary

Step count through the roof over last 10 days.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Now then….whats the next LDW (long distance walk) to plan?…..
