A fabulous 9+ Hours sleep ! Gave the quiz night a miss again (did not start until 9 pm , too late for us!). Maybe it was the whisky?
Another hearty breakfast and we left by 9:30am, taking it leisurely as only a 10 miler 🤪
A very early steep climb up a gravel path took longer than first imagined.

But some lovely colours in the early morning sun

Met a dog walker ….’she’s a real Heinz 57’ (the dog Not the dog walker!) … ‘Greek immigrant with 21 different breeds in her’. Obviously had sniffed something ..

Onward to Holne. We decided that after 20 minutes walking it was a bit too early to go into the tea shop.
But the second hand bookshop was something to die for. Run by Gill (apologies if it’s with a J, forgot to ask you) for last 20 years. Started as a new community venture and has now hundreds of books and raised thousands for charity. Fabulous enterprise 👏👏👏

So much choice…had to buy one each.

Then some leafy woodland following the river Dart.

We’re following the river, the river, the river ( sung to the tune of ‘following the leader’

Saw some ‘jumpers’ …Carol extremely brave watching (as an ex spinal injuries physio)… they did have their mother with them.

Then it was uphill for quite a while….

(We only took a bit of a perambulation around the vegetation!) … thank goodness for ‘All Trails’, ‘Watch GPS‘, and some general ‘this doesn’t feel right’ 🤭

Following Dr Blackall’s Drive… ‘Scenic carriageways were popular in the 19 th century and in the 1870’s the resident of nearby Spitchwick Manor, Dr Joseph Blackwall, had one laid out for his wife’s benefit after she could no longer walk on the moor’ (Ref Sue Viccars, Walking the Two Moors Way, 2019). Ahhh. Love know no bounds 🥰

Lunch was needed, or at least a snack

…I’m pleased to say they were NOT looking for us 🚁⬇️

….of course I saw some mushroooms throughout the day!

….and some moss

…Oh my goodness…moss AND fungus together…. Nearly in Heaven..🤣🤣🤣

Then more uphill and downhill before closing in on Widecombe -in the Moor.

…a little bit about Devon crosses from the website https://www.dartmoor-crosses.org.uk/intro.htm

Time for a cup of tea…

.. before wandering around St Pancras Church, the ‘Cathedral of the Moor’.
Below some interesting bits of info for you .

…and our Bed and Breakfast for the night…

… recover
… then off for some dinner at the Old Inn.
…whisky aperitif- this time a Dartmoor whisky from Bovey Tracey, the Dartmoor whisky distillery.

… just to give you an idea of my expertise: 😂😂😂😂😂
Colour: Henrik says light straw; Distillery says light golden
Nose: Henrik says ‘peachy’; Distillery says ‘Vanilla’
Palate: Henrik says ‘fruit, zing, a bit of peat’; Distillery says, ‘toffee, crème brûlée, marshmallow. ( Really???)
Body: Henrik says, ‘medium’; Distillery says, ‘medium’ 💥
Finish: Henrik says, ‘mild, long,’; Distillery says, ‘Long, honeyed’ 💥
I think I need to do some more work on this 🤭
(Note that I have resisted , yet again, to putting up a photo of our Chicken with ham, BBQ sauce, chips and coleslaw, followed by crumble and lashings of custard (H only) dinner )
Only in Widecombe in the Moor… sheep on the street at 9 pm (and the blur is NOT the Whisky talking but the sheep walking!)

😄
….🥱…😴
