MUST Do’s
- Take enough snacks
- Take enough socks
- Air your feet and maybe change socks halfway during the day
- Always have a Whisky in the evening if you can
- All waterproofs are essential
- Get in the zone early for looking out for very hidden signposts
- Speak with fellow walkers BUT ONLY if they want to.
- Avoid fellow walkers you DON’T want to talk to
- Be wary of Cows with calves- they can be belligerent
Must NOT do
- Take an umbrella – although we did see someone walking with one, AND it was useful waiting at the bus stop in the way home
- Take 3 books to read- you never will; a kindle and I – pad is enough, AND it leaves more space to buy 2nd hand ones at random book shops that pop up in villages
- Take a lot of fleeces unless walking in high altitude and certainly NOT in September
- Fill your suitcase to 20 kg all because the baggage moving company says you can
- Take your SLR camera and the extra lens on this sort of holiday – a lot of faff and unnecessary extra weight – never used it !
- Pack all your washing paraphernalia — share a toothpaste BUT NEVER a toothbrush
- Eat a cooked full English breakfast every day. IT IS NOT NECESSARY and makes the uphills even more difficult
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that any BnB or country inn has either a loose shower rail or wonky toilet seat or a loose door handle fitting, AND creaky floor boards” .(with passing acknowledgement to Jane Austen)
No building in Devon has straight walls, ceilings or floors
There are a million and one ways to secure a gate
