C2C Wainwright’s . T minus 2 days

‘Every walker who plans a cross country expedition refers to his maps, looks for the footpaths and the bridle ways and the areas of open access, links them together by quiet roads and lanes that avoid towns and busy traffic arteries, and so devises a pleasant route to his objective that he is free to walk , as is any man, without fear of trespass or restriction’.

This is the first paragraph to the introduction of the Readers edition of ‘awainwright A COAST TO COAST WALK’ copyright The Estate of A. Wainwright 1973 pub 2017 by Frances Lincoln.

‘Thank you’ Matthew and Karen for lending us this fabulous edition

I wonder if we have enough maps ? 🤣🤣🤣

Do we really need all of these?

Boots polished and dubbed

South African Rusks received – thank you again Sue (always a staple…and stable part of our LDW’s)

We have clearly overpacked too?

Carol has it all layed out
I followed suit
For the rucksack – no wonder it weighs 8kg! But please note the essential whistle, headtorch, space blanket, first aid kit, compass, sweeties AND foraging guide (thank you John and Marian)

READY !

One for Sherpavan to move day to day – the big one! – and one for on the back

…. Hmm … weather looking ‘typical’ 🦆

Wainwright comments; “It is generally better in this country to walk from the west or south so as to have the weather on your back and not in your face” (see ref above).

Setting off to Yorkshire yesterday (1st Sept) in shorts and t shirt… wondering…

Maybe we should have chosen somewhere warm and sunny ? Although cannot really complain about the summer we have had this year.

… oh … that’s for October 🤭👍 … shame

More from A Wainwright..

The route ….

Ref – Wainwright
(as above)

AND some very important advice ref barbed wire fences on p6 (ref as above). 🤪

Not sure whether the ‘what have you’ is worse???

I find it’s also always important to prepare yourself mentally and physically prior to a LDW …

  1. Reading a bit of the Saturday Times weekend section …
Really? lion’s mane mushrooms to your coffee ?

2. A bit of Pilates 48 hours beforehand to work on muscular tone and flexibility 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 – photo of H falling about trying to master the one leg stand with a band under the other foot and eyes closed NOT added to this blog !

100%zone 1 HR

3. Ensuring our nutritional knowledge is up to date …

That’s more like it ✅

It’s going to be a fabulous few weeks..
