‘Carpe diem Rodney, carpe diem’ 🤣 (with ref to ‘Only fools and horses’ , series 6 episode 1. 8/1/1989, BBC )

Breakfast consisted of chat with fellow walkers about the risks of cows in fields … dogs are apparently the problem … let them go and the cows will chase them not you (?).. what if you have no dog with you …

Also about the merits – or otherwise – of doing the trail East to West although Sherpavan man this morning said it was a logistical nightmare sorting out East to West (as he was picking up our bags )

Then a bit of chit chat with Mrs Hostess about the ‘village life’ (Carol heard that bit, not I) – fascinating apparently.

Wainwright called Danby Wiske ‘the lowest point between the coastal extremities of the walk, verily a slough of despond’ (ref awainwright. A coast to coast walk , publ Frances Lincoln 2013, p 116) but I think that is a bit harsh … although personally, I wouldn’t live there myself.

Over the railway line at Wray House – there’s always one rail line to cross- the main East Coast Main line between London and Edinburgh ! 😱 🤦‍♂️Just a small ‘free crossing’ ….

Then the dullest section today, along a track between Deepdale and Renny Farm

… although the beckoning of the Moors calls out loudly …

Diversion advice – an extra 5.5 miles /nearly 9 km detour

The A19 Controversy- already a dual carriageway in 1969 when Wainwright did it but much less traffic ? National Trails are attempting to make it safer by the diversion north to a bridge crossing.

(Rule 2 of walking – walk whichever route is appropriate to your level of fitness, speed, the weather, the associated traffic conditions etc)… so no advice given in these pages 🤪
