NIDDERDALE WAY- D4/ final day- the River Nidd- special long edition

Written by:

A very restful night’s sleep – apart from the cup of tea needed at 3:30 am after the take out/ cook at cottage curry last night !

Jen’s breakfast was the best out of all 4. She clearly enjoys her enterprise and works hard to make everyone feel at ease and very welcomed .

Definitely worth staying there if you’re in the area / BEWERLEY HOUSE FARM BNB – cannot recommend it more highly

It was also very beneficial that she enjoyed a natter as it allowed the ‘full English’ to settle … before doing the first 2 km which were all uphill… extremely uphill to be truthful.

Once on Nought Moor the views were just what you would want

Yorke’s folly – built by stricken workers in the late 18th century during the fall of the mining industry for the Yorke family – supposedly ‘romantic’ (?)… there is a bench between the two monoliths to sit on and gaze at the view, but that definitely looked far more modern than 18th C. Anyway, the romantic bit was allegedly to look up to the folly from Bewerley Hall, where the Yorke’s lived.

Two stoops – originally three stoops but one fell down in the storm of 1893

… and underfoot was worthy of any Muddy Boots walk in places

Past the telecoms mast

Amazing to think about all the information flying through here

Couple that with the wind farm and RAF Menwith Hill and you get a sense of time moving on away from the past history of the region

It was a bit breezy up top so some sheltering was required – if you were a sheep just sitting around watching walkers go by !⬇️

Farmyards … full of interesting vistas ..

‘Smell’ or something else? Read below

Passing through one of many farm yards reminded me of The Kitchen Cabinet (series 52 post bag edition released 11th April 2026) that we were listening to on the radio while driving up on the M1 on Monday.

For those unaccustomed to this radio programme hosted by Jay Rayner (food critic), it is essentially expert chefs discussing various aspects of cooking and cooking history.

(BBC.co.uk. “Jay Rayner hosts a culinary panel show packed full of tasty titbits that might change the way we think about food, cooking and eating. An expert panel answers audience questions.”)

Not too stuffy and entertaining to listen to, especially for me – being someone whose role definitely leans more towards eating than cooking 🤣🤣🤣.

I digress- this episode had a listener bemoaning the fact that the panel often used the word ‘smell’ in their discussions, rather than more varied words. So Jay and the panel waxed lyrically about what other words one might use to describe what the nose senses during cooking.

So here is today’s question related to the programme.

Q. What was coming from here in our direction?

1. Is it a scent?

2. Is it a fragrance?

3. Is it a smell?

4. Is it a perfume?

5. Is it an aroma?

Or for those of you who want a more cullinary challenge, what can you cook with a ton of carrots AND 1 potato?

… and seeing it’s the last day of the walk , a bonus question !!!😜

Q. What do you see in the cloud formation ?

A poodle?

Onwards down the hill to lunch stop

As an aside, the very helpful young man serving behind the counter said he did the Nidderdale Way in 3 days a few years ago – that’s some going !

Coffee on the green – saving the pasty for later.

… love a good book ⬇️

… and a good ancient church

… and a really really good river bank to walk along

Even dandelions look great in the right place

Good job we didn’t have to cross here- H would have certainly fallen in this time !

… along the back of river side gardens.. ‘Hello’ ⬇️

… before the picnic luncheon, looking cool

As usual, the path went up another hill just as you thought you were on the home straight for some more ‘views’

At Birstwith we decided we NEEDED an ice cream… but alas not to be had as not open 😢

The final burst home along The Nidd …

… to return for a welcome scone and cup of tea at ‘chez BURLING’s’

… and supper later … just look at the lightness of that !(H getting baking tips for certain)

60 miles or so (95+ km) in 4 days well spent.

Byee! Until next time #C2C in September #195 milesin16days😱

2 vital bits of information for you.

  1. This is how the blog is created

2. Can you spot the rare ‘ground nesting warbler’? No? The reason is that by the time nationally renowned wildlife photographer HS had got his camera / phone out and zoomed in it has flown away 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤪🤦‍♂️- standard regular occurrence

He was sitting on that clump of grass, honest 🤓
